Cortland Police are actively searching for two suspects following a drive-by shooting that occurred on Union Street in Cortland, New York, around 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026. The incident took place near the intersection of Union and Owego Streets, where officers responded to reports of shots fired. According to police, a driver reported that a handgun was fired at his vehicle while he was traveling west on Union Street. The gunfire shattered the rear passenger-side window, and authorities stated that two passengers inside the vehicle were nearly struck. The victim identified the suspected shooter as 19-year-old Daryen J. Bethal, of 39 Union Street in Cortland, and his alleged accomplice as 21-year-old Marcus D. Burns, of 5537 Route 281 in Homer. Police report that the shooter and accomplice fled the scene in a red sedan driven by a female. The vehicle was last seen traveling north on Main Street. An all-points bulletin was issued to law enforcement agencies to locate the vehicle. Around 8:20 p.m., New York State Police located the suspect vehicle unoccupied at an address on Route 281 in the Town of Homer. The vehicle was subsequently impounded as evidence. Investigators have collected statements from victims and witnesses and recovered security camera footage from nearby homes and businesses that captured portions of the incident. However, the shooter, his accomplice, and the handgun involved have not been located. The handgun is described as a black semiautomatic. Cortland Police Chief David Guerrera emphasized that while the incident was a targeted attack upon people associated with the shooter, the public should use extreme caution if encountering the shooter or his accomplice. Neither suspect is currently in custody. Police continue to urge residents to exercise extreme caution.
