Authorities are searching for an unidentified male suspect following a mass shooting that occurred on Saturday night near the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. The incident took place around 10:35 p.m. on West 31st Street during Independence Day holiday celebrations. According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the gunman, described as an unidentified male clad entirely in black and wearing a ski mask, approached the fence line of an apartment building courtyard and discharged a firearm into a family cookout. The attack resulted in eight victims being struck by gunfire. Emergency medical personnel transported all eight individuals to local hospitals. One victim, a 21-year-old woman, remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest. The remaining seven victims, including a 25-year-old woman, two men aged 33 and 37, and four boys aged 6, 7, 12, and 14, are in stable condition and expected to survive. Police recovered a handgun equipped with an extended magazine and ten shell casings at the scene. No suspects have been apprehended, and the shooter fled the scene on foot immediately after the attack. Investigators are examining potential connections between this shooting and a separate gang-related homicide that occurred on the same block earlier in the week. Law enforcement is currently reviewing surveillance footage and seeking additional witnesses to identify the shooter and determine if additional suspects were involved. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the violence, stating that the city will not tolerate such acts and is recommitting to ensuring safe celebrations.
