Detroit police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a violent carjacking incident that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026. The alleged crime took place shortly before noon near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Chalmers Street on the city’s east side. According to Detroit Police spokesperson Jasmin Barmore, the victim was a father who was driving his vehicle when a man approached the car, forcibly pulled him from the driver’s seat, and stole the vehicle. Critically, the suspect drove away with the victim’s 7-month-old infant still strapped securely in the back seat. Law enforcement agencies across the region were alerted to the situation. Michigan State Police located the stolen black sedan approximately an hour and five minutes after the incident, finding it parked inside a garage in the 19500 block of Edmore Drive. Officers from the Detroit Police Department’s Commercial Auto Theft Section (CATS) responded to the scene and discovered the infant still inside the vehicle. The baby was successfully recovered, unharmed, and examined at Children’s Hospital before being reunited with his family. Police confirmed the infant was in good condition and appeared to be smiling. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived and remains at large. Investigators have released a description of the suspect as a Black man standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a slim build, a short haircut, and wearing all-black clothing. The motive for the carjacking and the reason the vehicle was abandoned at the recovery location remain under investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the Detroit Police Department’s Commercial Auto Theft Section or call 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
