Aziel Zacapala, a 15-year-old sophomore at Rosemead High School, was fatally stabbed during a violent street altercation in the 9700 block of Fern Street in El Monte, California, on Friday, July 14, 2026. The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when Zacapala and two other individuals were attacked. While the two adult male victims survived the assault and remain hospitalized in stable condition, Zacapala succumbed to his injuries. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the El Monte Police Department with the active homicide investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the number of suspects involved, nor have they released physical descriptions of those responsible. Consequently, the suspects remain at large as detectives continue their search. A memorial featuring candles, flowers, and a cross has been established at the scene, located across from an elementary school, reflecting the community's grief. Zacapala is remembered by his family and classmates as a talented athlete with aspirations of playing in the NFL, as well as a kind and promising student. The El Monte Union High School District has announced that wellness coordinators will provide support to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
