Detroit police are actively searching for a suspect who remains at large following a carjacking incident that involved a seven-month-old infant. The suspect is described as a Black male, standing between five feet nine inches and five feet ten inches tall, with a slim build, a short haircut, and wearing all-black clothing. The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, shortly before noon, near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Chalmers Street on Detroit’s east side. Stephen Tryban, a resident of Troy, initially reported that he was carjacked while his infant son was strapped in the back seat of his unattended black sedan. This report triggered a massive law enforcement response, including an alert to agencies across the region. Michigan State Police located the stolen vehicle approximately an hour later in the 19500 block of Edmore Drive, where it was found parked inside a garage. Detroit police’s Commercial Auto Theft Section responded to the scene and recovered the infant, who was found safe and unharmed inside the vehicle. The baby was examined at Children’s Hospital and subsequently reunited with his family. However, subsequent investigations revealed that Tryban had voluntarily left his vehicle to speak with an acquaintance on her porch, meaning no carjacking of Tryban occurred, though the vehicle and child were indeed taken by another party. While Tryban has been charged with making a false report of a felony, the actual theft of the vehicle and the abduction of the child remain under investigation.
