Belhaven police have charged 32-year-old Dashauntis Chase with one count of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of LeMonte Crandell. Chase remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. The investigation began on June 15, when officers responded to reports of gunfire on Elm Street in Belhaven. Upon arrival, police discovered Crandell dead at the scene. A month after the incident, the murder charge was filed, bringing a sense of progress to Crandell's family, who have been searching for answers. Family member Denise Lampkin expressed relief at the development but urged Chase to surrender. She stated, 'Turn yourself in. It's not worth continuing to run. We know you did it. Go to police, tell your side of the story and face the music.' Lampkin also highlighted the ongoing grief, noting that the loss affects the family every day through small reminders that Crandell is gone permanently. During the investigation, authorities learned that 18-year-old Mary Evett, who has been reported missing by her family members, may be with Chase. Investigators clarified that Evett is not a suspect in Crandell's death and there are no active warrants for her arrest. However, her safety and whereabouts remain a concern.
