The FBI and the Boulder Police Department have jointly released new age-progressed images of Thayne Alan Smika, a fugitive wanted for the 1983 murder of his roommate, Sidney Lee Wells. Smika, who was 24 years old at the time of the crime, is now approximately 67 years old. The incident occurred on August 1, 1983, in Boulder, Colorado, when police responded to an apartment complex where Wells, a 22-year-old University of Colorado senior, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Although identified as a suspect immediately, Smika was not initially charged. He fled and was last seen in 1986 when his car was discovered abandoned in Beverly Hills, California. In December 2010, a state arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued, followed by a federal charge for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Authorities note that Smika may have lived in Yelapa, Mexico, for many years prior to 2007 and does not possess a valid U.S. passport. His current appearance is uncertain; he may be clean-shaven or have facial hair and might wear glasses. FBI Special Agent in Charge Amanda Koldjeski and Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn emphasized their unwavering commitment to bringing Smika to justice and delivering accountability for the victim’s family.
