The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Boulder Police Department have jointly released new age-progression images of Thayne Alan Smika, a suspect in the 1983 murder of Sidney Lee Wells. Wells, a 22-year-old journalism student at the University of Colorado Boulder, was found dead from a gunshot wound in his apartment on August 1, 1983. At the time of the crime, Smika was 24 years old and had been Wells' roommate. The victim was the son of actress Lola Van Wagenen and the grandson of actor Robert Redford, a connection that has kept the case in the public eye. Smika is now believed to be 67 years old. Authorities note that Smika was initially identified as a suspect but was never formally charged with the murder. However, in December 2010, an arrest warrant was issued for him, and he was subsequently charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Three years after the shooting, Smika’s car was discovered abandoned in California with stolen license plates, marking his disappearance. The FBI has stated that they have little information regarding Smika’s current whereabouts or status. While it is known that he may have lived in Yelapa, Mexico, prior to 2007, law enforcement does not confirm if he remains there. This release follows a previous round of age-progression images distributed in 2011 and a $10,000 reward announced last year for information leading to his arrest. FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Amanda Koldjeski emphasized the agency's commitment to justice, stating, "It is never too late to hold a murder suspect accountable." The FBI and Boulder Police are urging the public to review the new images and come forward with any information that could help locate Smika and bring him into custody.
