Vero Beach Police are searching for Jesse Ellis, the primary suspect in a double homicide that occurred Tuesday morning outside the Indian River County Main Library. The incident, which unfolded around 7:01 a.m., resulted in the deaths of Stacie Ellis Mason and Danny Ooley, both longtime Indian River County employees. Authorities state the killings were targeted and stemmed from a marital breakup and an alleged affair between Mason and Ooley. Investigators believe Mason’s husband, Jesse Ellis, approached Ooley’s parked Ford Ranger after Mason entered the passenger side. Surveillance video captured Ellis opening fire, killing Ooley in the driver’s seat before moving around the vehicle to shoot Mason as she exited or fell from the truck. The suspect fled the scene in a gray Ford F-150 and is believed to have driven to South Beach. Reports indicate a man matching Ellis’s description was seen walking into the ocean fully clothed around 7:30 a.m., and emergency responders encountered a man approximately 900 yards offshore who provided a false name and declined assistance. Although police have not positively identified the man in the water as Ellis, he remains at large and is considered a person of interest. The weapon used, described as an AR-style long gun, was recovered at the scene. Police Chief David Currey emphasized that the case is an isolated incident but warned that any encounter with Ellis could be dangerous. Search warrants have been executed on Ellis’s vehicle, the victims’ vehicles, and a South County home, yielding multiple firearms and digital evidence. The Indian River County Administrator confirmed that both victims were dedicated public servants, with Ooley serving for nearly 25 years and Mason for 14 years. The community is being offered counseling and support services. Authorities continue to search land and water for the suspect and urge the public to contact the Vero Beach Police Department with any information regarding his whereabouts.
