The New York Police Department is searching for Frank James, a 62-year-old man described as heavyset and wearing a green construction vest, gray hoodie, and surgical mask, in connection with a mass shooting on a crowded subway train in Brooklyn. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at approximately 8:24 a.m. during the height of rush hour on a northbound N train approaching the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood. James allegedly tossed two smoke bombs onto the floor and fired at least 33 shots from a Glock 17 9mm semiautomatic pistol, striking ten individuals. Five victims are reported to be in critical but stable condition, while more than a dozen others suffered injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to panic attacks and falls during the chaotic evacuation. Police recovered the firearm, ammunition, smoke grenades, a hatchet, and other items at the scene. Investigators also located a U-Haul rental van linked to James, which was found parked on Kings Highway in Brooklyn; the van had been rented in Philadelphia. James is considered a person of interest and is described as dangerous. Authorities have not yet determined his motive, though officials state the incident does not appear to be terrorism-related, although the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation. The NYPD has established a tip line for the public to provide information, offering a $50,000 reward for details leading to the suspect's arrest. Subway service on the D, N, and R lines was disrupted but has since been restored. Police continue to process the scene and urge anyone with information to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline.
