Elvin Martinez, a 31-year-old national of Honduras, remains at large following an escape from Border Patrol custody in Louisiana. The incident occurred Monday morning along eastbound Interstate 12 at the boundary between Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes. During a traffic stop conducted by Border Patrol agents, three Hispanic men were detained in a vehicle. The driver and front passenger fled the scene, prompting an immediate search operation. Martinez, who was handcuffed to the front of the vehicle, managed to break free and evade capture. He was last seen on a trail camera near Fire Tower Road and Highway 190 in the Robert, Bedico, and Goodbee area. Authorities believe Martinez is currently hiding in the wooded area north of Interstate 12, potentially within St. Tammany Parish. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a long-sleeve camouflage shirt and blue jeans and was barefoot. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office initially led the search, utilizing K9 units, but called off the active search at midnight after the canine units lost Martinez's scent in St. Tammany Parish. While Martinez remains unaccounted for, another suspect involved in the incident, Eduin Gonzalez Avilez, 26, was taken into custody Monday afternoon. Avilez was apprehended after deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a handcuffed Hispanic man attempting to break into a mobile home on Dusty Lane in the Bedico area. He emerged from the woods behind the Bedico Creek Trailer Park and was arrested at 3 p.m. The third individual, Cesar Contreras, is the registered owner of the vehicle pulled over and is currently cooperating with law enforcement. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office has stated they are no longer involved in the search for Martinez. The public is urged to remain vigilant and contact 911 immediately if Martinez is spotted or if any suspicious activity is observed that could aid in the investigation.
