Elijah Rey Garcia, a 19-year-old man, remains at large and is wanted by law enforcement in connection with a serious hit-and-run incident in Amarillo, Texas. The suspect is accused of striking a fuel tanker truck with his Dodge Ram 2500, an impact that sent the vehicle and its trailer crashing into the ABC 7 television studio building, causing significant structural damage. According to crash reports, Garcia ran a flashing red light at the intersection of Southeast 11th Avenue and South Pierce Street before fleeing the scene. Although police contacted Garcia by phone shortly after the crash, during which he admitted to driving and promised to surrender the following day, he failed to turn himself in and remains a fugitive. Newly obtained arrest reports reveal that Garcia had been arrested twice in the seven weeks preceding the hit-and-run, with alcohol playing a central role in all incidents. On June 21, Amarillo police arrested Garcia for discharging a firearm in a municipality and unlawfully carrying a weapon after finding him with an AR-15-style rifle and smelling alcohol. Less than a month later, on July 15, Garcia was arrested for driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance after a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper observed signs of intoxication and found a THC vape pen. In the current hit-and-run case, investigators found multiple open alcoholic beverage containers in Garcia’s truck and listed alcohol intoxication as a contributing factor. The Amarillo Police Department has faced criticism on social media for not arresting Garcia immediately after the crash, citing that the offense was a misdemeanor not witnessed by officers and required a warrant. Legal experts have described the handling of the case as unusual. Authorities continue to search for Garcia, who is wanted for his role in the crash that damaged the news station.
