Elijah Rey Garcia, a 19-year-old resident of Amarillo, Texas, remains at large as of Sunday afternoon after failing to surrender to authorities as previously promised. Garcia is wanted in connection with a serious traffic incident that occurred on Friday at the intersection of Southeast 11th Avenue and South Pierce Street. According to the Amarillo Police Department crash report, Garcia was operating a pickup truck when he allegedly ran a flashing red light, resulting in a collision with a fuel truck. The impact caused the fuel tanker to crash into the ABC 7 television studio building, causing significant structural damage that has forced the closure of the affected section of the facility. Investigators discovered multiple open alcoholic beverage containers inside Garcia’s vehicle and have listed alcohol consumption and disregarding a traffic signal as contributing factors to the crash. Garcia fled the scene before officers arrived but later admitted to driving the vehicle and agreed to turn himself in the following day. He has not done so, and police confirm that an arrest warrant will be issued regardless of his voluntary surrender. Sgt. Carla Burr of the Amarillo Police Department noted that while the initial charge is a misdemeanor, the warrant ensures law enforcement will eventually apprehend the suspect. This incident adds to a troubling pattern of alleged criminal behavior for Garcia, who has been accused of three other offenses in less than two months. On July 15, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance, and on June 21, he was charged with discharging a firearm in certain municipalities.
