Authorities in San Bernardino County are actively searching for an individual suspected of firing a handgun toward a BNSF Railway Police officer during an investigation into rail car burglaries in the Cajon Pass area. The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, August 10, 2026, around 6:04 p.m. near the intersection of Cajon Boulevard and Keenbrook Road. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, BNSF officers encountered individuals suspected of burglarizing rail cars and attempted to deter the activity. During this encounter, a suspect discharged a handgun in the direction of an officer. Fortunately, the officer was not struck or injured. Following the shooting, the train involved continued northbound before eventually stopping in the Summit Valley area. Deputies and BNSF officers established a perimeter around the train to conduct a thorough search. With assistance from Sheriff’s Aviation and personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division, authorities searched rail cars believed to have been entered. Despite the extensive search, no suspects were located. Several vehicles and individuals encountered in the surrounding area were investigated but determined to be unrelated to the incident. No deputies or BNSF officers were injured during the confrontation. The investigation has been assumed by the Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force and remains ongoing.
