Authorities in Gaffney, South Carolina, are conducting an intensive manhunt for Kevon Ken'Dre Covington, an 18-year-old man considered armed and dangerous and currently at large. Covington is a person of interest in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr., which occurred on the morning of August 12, 2026. The incident took place just before Fair Jr. was scheduled to board a school bus near his apartment. According to the Cherokee County Coroner, an altercation preceded the shooting, and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Fifteen other students were on the bus during the event, but no other injuries were reported. A second individual of interest remains unidentified by police. On August 13, Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller confirmed that Covington had been spotted at least twice in the Gaffney area but had not yet been apprehended. In response to the threat, a lockdown has been implemented in the Boiling Springs Highway and Oakridge Road areas. Law enforcement agencies, including the Gaffney Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina State Highway Patrol, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, have deployed between 60 and 80 officers to search the zone. Residents are urged to avoid the lockdown area, check their properties for suspicious activity, and call 911 immediately if they see Covington. Police emphasize that the suspect should not be approached under any circumstances.
