The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for an unidentified driver responsible for a serious hit-and-run incident that occurred in the town of Merrill, Wisconsin. The incident took place early Sunday morning, August 16, 2026, between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Investigators responded to the intersection of County Road K and Lake Pesobic Road after receiving a call from a citizen who discovered a man lying unresponsive in the roadway. Upon arrival, first responders noted that the victim had begun moving and was suffering from a visible head injury. According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was walking along the west side of County Road K when a southbound vehicle struck him. The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported by Merrill Fire Department ambulance to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Due to the severity of the crash, the victim has very little memory of the event and was unable to provide a description of the vehicle or the driver. While investigators located physical evidence at the scene to assist in identifying the vehicle, a nearby Flock safety camera that could have captured the suspect’s license plate or vehicle details was out of service due to recent vandalism. Based on the evidence collected, deputies believe the suspect vehicle is likely a truck featuring damage to its passenger-side rearview mirror. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone who was driving in the area during the specified time frame or who has information regarding the crash to come forward.
