Abdulloi Toshpulodzoda, a man accused of murdering his landlord in 2019, has fled the United States and is currently at large in Tajikistan. Toshpulodzoda was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was subsequently committed to the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI) in Falls Church, Virginia, in 2022. According to court documents and reports from FOX5, Toshpulodzoda was granted an approved 48-hour pass from the facility on July 6, 2026. Instead of returning as required, he traveled to Dulles International Airport and boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul, Turkey. From there, he continued his journey to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, effectively leaving the country on a one-way ticket. The escape occurred shortly after a judge determined that Toshpulodzoda remained mentally ill and required continued inpatient treatment. Upon his failure to return by the July 8 deadline, the NVMHI placed him on escape status and issued a facility warrant. In response to the international flight, Virginia’s Commonwealth Attorney’s Office filed a motion on August 5 requesting that a judge issue a warrant enforceable beyond Virginia’s borders. A bench warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued. This incident highlights the complexities of managing patients on passes under Virginia law, which allows committed individuals to leave the facility without an escort under certain conditions. Toshpulodzoda had previously been allowed to travel to Washington, DC, in 2024 to obtain a passport. Authorities are now seeking his apprehension, with the warrant extending beyond state lines to facilitate international cooperation.
