Barnett is accused of killing Carlos Ramirez, a 23-year-old Tucson Police Department recruit, and injuring a second victim, a 23-year-old corrections officer. The incident took place early Thursday morning, August 20, 2026, on South Enchanted Spring Drive in the far westside neighborhood. Ramirez, a former Pima County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer, had completed 23 weeks of training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center and was scheduled to graduate on August 27, 2026. His fiancée, who was also a corrections officer, was injured in the attack and is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital in stable condition. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Barnett and are actively investigating the case. Detectives are also attempting to identify two additional suspects who were present during the shooting. These individuals were described as wearing all-black clothing and ski masks. Law enforcement is searching for a suspect vehicle, described as a gray SUV, possibly an Acura MDX, which may have a missing fuel door. A vehicle matching this description was located earlier by detectives. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, led by Sheriff Chris Nanos, has closed a section of South Enchanted Spring Drive from West Star Wash Loop to Long Pond Walk Way to facilitate the ongoing death investigation.
