Authorities in Tucson, Arizona, have identified Alex James Barnett, a 33-year-old man with a significant criminal history, as a suspect in the fatal shooting of Tucson Police recruit Carlos Ramirez. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has issued a first-degree murder arrest warrant for Barnett, who is currently at large. The incident occurred early on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, when Ramirez was found fatally shot in his home. During the attack, Ramirez’s pregnant fiancée, a corrections officer with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, was also injured but is expected to recover. Barnett’s background includes multiple prior charges such as theft, fraud, and unlawful imprisonment. Law enforcement has released video footage showing Barnett and another suspect at a Shell gas station shortly before the shooting, as well as footage of a third suspect near Palo Verde and 33rd Street hours after the crime. Investigators have located Barnett’s vehicle approximately 30 minutes from the shooting site. Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto described the loss as tremendous for the community and urged the public to come forward with any information. Ramirez, 23, had recently completed 23 weeks of training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center and was poised to graduate within a week. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department remains the primary authority handling the investigation, working in collaboration with the Tucson Police Department.
