Louisville Metro Police and University of Louisville Police are searching for a suspect at large following a fatal shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of August 23, 2026. The incident took place around 1:44 a.m. in the 400 block of Reg Smith Court, near the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus. Responding officers discovered two adult females who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. University officials have confirmed that neither victim was a student or employee of the university, and their identities are currently being withheld pending notification of their families. The shooting occurred near the Family Scholar House, a non-profit facility that partners with the university to support student parents and families facing poverty and housing instability. UofL President Gerry Bradley and Provost Kathryn Cardarelli issued a joint statement expressing deep sorrow for the community and the residents of the Scholar House. While university leadership stated there is no immediate reason to believe an active threat exists on campus, they have urged the community to remain vigilant. The investigation is being handled by the LMPD Homicide Unit. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and locating the suspect.
