Anthony Baines, an 8-year Army veteran and Uber driver, found himself in the middle of a high-speed police pursuit in Houston on August 7. While driving near Seventh Street, Baines was approached by Houston Police Department officers who had responded to a report of a terroristic threat. The incident began when a suspect allegedly threatened to shoot a woman and her children at an apartment pool. Upon attempting to detain the individual, the suspect fled on foot, sprinting past Baines' vehicle with officers in close pursuit. In a dramatic turn of events, one officer opened the passenger door of Baines' car and shouted, "Go, go, go!" Baines, citing his military background, remained calm and drove the officers around the block to allow them to reach their squad car and resume the chase. Despite the assistance, the suspect managed to escape and remains at large. The Houston Police Officers' Union President, Doug Griffith, clarified that while officers appreciated the help, civilians are under no legal obligation to assist in a chase and have the right to refuse. Baines successfully picked up his scheduled rider shortly after, who remained unaware of the chaos until noticing police helicopters overhead. The investigation into the original terroristic threat is ongoing, and the suspect is still being sought by authorities.
