Authorities are conducting an extensive, multi-agency search in Springvale, Maine, for two or more potentially armed suspects who opened fire on a police officer during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning. The incident began just before 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of Lebanon and Shaw streets, where Sanford police attempted to stop a vehicle. According to Sanford Police Major Mark Dyer, occupants of the vehicle fired several rounds at the officer and their cruiser before fleeing the scene. The officer involved was not injured. Following the shooting, the suspects' vehicle was discovered abandoned on a trail off Blanchard Road, and investigators are seeking a warrant to examine the vehicle for evidence. As of mid-Tuesday morning, police have not released specific physical descriptions of the suspects or any concrete leads to the public. The search operation involves Sanford police, the York County Sheriff’s Office, and law enforcement from Berwick, Kennebunk, and Old Orchard Beach, along with a helicopter crew from the Maine Forest Service. Police are urging the public to remain alert and avoid the affected area, which includes Blanchard Road, Hanson Ridge Road, Lebanon Street, Oak Street, Smith Road, and Sunset Road.
