Alturas Police are urgently seeking the public's assistance in locating a 29-year-old fugitive who remains at large following a series of incidents in Modoc County. The man, identified as a transient originally from Michigan, was released from Modoc County Jail on his own recognizance on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Shortly after his release, he allegedly removed his GPS ankle monitor and disappeared from the area. Law enforcement discovered the tracking device the following day, noting that it had been detached from his ankle and left behind. The alert was heightened after a break-in occurred late that night at the city pound, where two of the man's three dogs went missing. Police confirmed that the GPS ping from the monitor placed him in the vicinity of the pound during the incident. The suspect is described as 6-foot-2, weighing 180 pounds, with red hair, blue eyes, and multiple facial tattoos. Authorities emphasize that the public should not approach, confront, or attempt to detain him due to safety concerns. The man's legal troubles in the area began on August 17, 2026, when Alturas Police responded to a report of his dogs attacking a deer. Although he was not arrested at that time, a database check revealed he is a registered sex offender. He had registered in Michigan in May 2026 but failed to check in upon arriving in California, violating state registration requirements. When officers attempted to locate him again regarding the violation, he allegedly resisted arrest. Consequently, he faces charges for resisting arrest and violating sex offender registration requirements. The Modoc County Sheriff's Office and Alturas Police are coordinating the search and have requested that anyone with information regarding his whereabouts contact law enforcement immediately. This is an active investigation, and the suspect is considered dangerous.
