Illinois State Police investigators have released new details regarding the unsolved 1992 kidnapping and murder of Tammy Zywicki, a native of Greenville, South Carolina. The case remains active, and authorities are urging the public to assist in identifying the perpetrator. Zywicki, who was traveling from Evanston, Illinois, to college in Grinnell, Iowa, disappeared on August 23, 1992. Her vehicle was found abandoned on Interstate 80 in LaSalle County, Illinois, and her body was discovered on September 1, 1992, in rural Lawrence County, Missouri, approximately 500 miles from where her car was left. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed eight times in the chest. Investigators believe the crime was opportunistic, noting that witnesses saw her with a man who gained her trust before overpowering her. The suspect is described as a white male, possibly in his late 30s or early 40s, over six feet tall, with brown or dark bushy hair, and ties to the trucking industry and Southern California. A person of interest, Theresa Belenske, has been identified based on DNA found on a blanket associated with the crime scene, but she is not considered the suspect. Belenske, who died in 2014, was known to hitchhike with truck drivers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Police are seeking information regarding Belenske’s travels and any individuals she may have traveled with during that period. The investigating agency is the Illinois State Police, in coordination with the FBI.
