Eduardo Acosta-Gonzalez, a 54-year-old sports coach and hitting instructor, remains at large following the filing of aggravated criminal sexual abuse charges. The suspect, who resides in Hoffman Estates, is wanted by the Vernon Hills Police Department for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old female juvenile athlete he coached. The incident is reported to have occurred during the spring and summer of 2026 at a sports performance center in Vernon Hills, where Acosta-Gonzalez rented space to train youth. According to Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief Shannon Holubetz, the suspect is accused of making inappropriate physical contact with the victim, including massaging her breast and groin area, on two separate occasions. The investigation was initiated after a referral from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. An arrest warrant was obtained on August 21, 2026, but efforts to locate and apprehend Acosta-Gonzalez have been unsuccessful. Authorities believe the suspect may have left the state. Acosta-Gonzalez faces two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, classified as an enhanced Class 1 felony due to his position of trust and authority over the victim. If convicted, he could face up to fifteen years in prison for each count. Police have notified known youth programs affiliated with the suspect and are urging parents of athletes trained by Acosta-Gonzalez, particularly those in the Vernon Hills and Wauconda areas, to speak with their children and report any suspected criminal activity. Witness statements suggest the suspect may have acted inappropriately toward other underage athletes.
