The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is searching for 26-year-old Erik Eduardo Navarro, who remains at large following a brutal assault on an elderly woman in Crestline, California. The incident occurred in August at the home of 71-year-old Therese Garcia. According to authorities, Garcia had met Navarro while he was walking in her neighborhood and, believing his story that his belongings had been stolen while camping nearby, allowed him to stay at her residence temporarily. After six days, Navarro allegedly began making demands and taking control of the home. When Garcia instructed him to leave, he waited until she fell asleep on the couch and then assaulted her with a metal baseball bat. Investigators state that Navarro beat Garcia for hours, believing she was dead, before stealing her phone, credit cards, and keys and fleeing the scene. Garcia survived only because neighbors requested a welfare check, discovering her with severe head, facial, and traumatic brain injuries, as well as broken bones. She remains hospitalized in stable condition but faces a long recovery without health insurance. Sheriff's investigators are urging the public to assist in locating Navarro, who is considered dangerous. The family of the victim has expressed horror at the betrayal of kindness, emphasizing that Garcia was simply trying to help someone in need. Authorities continue to seek tips that could lead to Navarro's arrest.
