Monterey County law enforcement officials have issued an Amber Alert for 14-year-old Diana Perez, who is currently at large and considered a victim in a tragic infant homicide case. The case centers on the discovery of the body of a newborn girl, referred to as "Baby Angelita," found deceased by the side of a road in Moss Landing, California. Investigators have identified 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez as the father of the infant through DNA evidence. Both Perez and his daughter, Diana, are wanted on warrants that include charges of incest, which imply that Perez impregnated his minor daughter. Diana is believed to have given birth on the roadside. When arrest warrants were first announced on August 31, Sheriff Nieto characterized Diana as a "murder suspect" who must be brought to justice, a statement that drew heavy public backlash and condemnation. The Monterey County District Attorney’s office subsequently clarified that Diana is a victim of her father’s abuse and was not involved in the warrant. In response to the controversy, the Sheriff’s Office reversed its position, stating that the immediate priority is to locate Diana and ensure her safety. Authorities confirmed via video evidence that Diana and Perez were traveling together in a white Nissan Altima without license plates. The agency acknowledged that earlier hesitation to issue an Amber Alert was due to a lack of information regarding the vehicle and uncertainty about whether the pair was traveling together. Investigators are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the white Nissan Altima or the two individuals.
