Authorities in Georgia have officially called off the active search for a suspect who fled from a Georgia State Patrol trooper following a traffic stop in Cornelia on Friday, September 11, 2026. The incident began at approximately 3:03 p.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a southbound Dodge truck with dark-tinted windows near the intersection of Georgia Highway 105 and J. Warren Road. The driver initially slowed but then accelerated onto the grassy shoulder, initiating a pursuit that continued through Walnut Street and Lakey Lane behind a local candle factory. The vehicle stopped at a residence later identified as the registered owner’s address, where the suspect exited the truck and fled into the surrounding woods. Troopers pursued the individual on foot but eventually lost sight of him. A multi-agency search operation involving the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Cornelia Police Department, Baldwin Police Department, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources was launched, with assistance from a tracking dog. The search covered areas around Chase Road, Camp Creek Road, and Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway for more than two hours. Despite the extensive efforts, the suspect remains at large. The man is described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, bald, and having tattoos on his neck and upper body. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and no shirt, reportedly crossing Chase Road near Sellers Loop. While authorities state the individual is not believed to pose a danger, they urge residents and motorists not to approach him and to call 911 immediately if he is spotted. The suspect’s name has not been released to the public. No injuries were reported during the incident or the subsequent manhunt.
