William Bradford Bishop Jr., born August 1, 1936, is a fugitive wanted in connection with the murders of five family members. The suspect, a Yale-educated former U.S. Foreign Service officer, is alleged to have bludgeoned his wife, Annette; his mother, Lobelia; and his three sons, William Bradford III, Brenton, and Geoffrey, to death. The incident occurred on March 1, 1976, at the family’s home in Bethesda, Maryland. Following the killings, Bishop transported the bodies in a Chevrolet station wagon to rural North Carolina, where they were discovered in a shallow grave near Columbia on March 2, 1976. The bodies had been set on fire, complicating initial identification. Bishop was charged with murder in Maryland and federally charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Despite an extensive international manhunt, hundreds of tips, and a placement on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list from 2014 to 2018, Bishop has never been apprehended. The last confirmed sighting of Bishop occurred on March 2, 1976, when he used a credit card at a sporting goods store in Jacksonville, North Carolina, approximately 100 miles from the crime scene. The FBI continues to list Bishop as wanted for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Investigators have received numerous unverified sightings over the decades, including an alleged encounter in Italy in 1978, but none have led to his capture. The FBI notes that if Bishop is still alive, he would be 90 years old. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the location of William Bradford Bishop Jr. to contact the FBI or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The case remains open, with the FBI continuing to review leads and investigate potential identities Bishop may have assumed after vanishing.
