A critical incident involving a Milwaukee Police Department officer and two suspects occurred on Tuesday night, September 8, 2026, in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident began when officers near 39th and Meinecke streets attempted to pull over a vehicle matching the description of a car wanted in connection with a Glendale shots-fired investigation that took place on September 7. The driver fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended near 37th and Wright. Upon the vehicle stopping, two suspects exited and fled on foot. One of the suspects, identified by the medical examiner as 23-year-old Printis Smith, engaged in a struggle with an officer. Police state that Smith allegedly pulled a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Smith died at the scene. The officer, a 35-year-old man with over three years of service, sustained a non-fatal leg injury and was released from the hospital. He has been placed on administrative duty. The second suspect, who also fled the scene, remains at large. Neither the driver of the vehicle nor the specific identity of the suspects in relation to the Glendale investigation has been confirmed. Civil rights attorney B'Ivory Lamarr is representing the family of Printis Smith, who contends that Smith stopped running and was not given a clear command to drop his weapon before deadly force was used. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, with Wauwatosa Police Department as the lead agency, is investigating the shooting. Body-worn camera video is expected to be released to the public within 15 days in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure 575. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the second suspect to contact the Milwaukee Police Department.
