A new documentary titled 'The Coward' is set to open in AMC theaters on September 25, aiming to renew public attention on one of Arizona’s most notorious unsolved crimes. The film centers on the 2004 murder of Keith Palomares, a 24-year-old armored courier who was shot five times outside the Ahwatukee AMC theater in Phoenix. At the time of the killing, Palomares was carrying a bag containing $56,000 in cash. According to investigators, the suspect, Jason Derek Brown, ambushed Palomares, seized the money, and fled the scene on a bicycle to a nearby BMW. Brown has not been seen since the incident and remains at large. Brown, now in his 50s, was previously listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and has been featured on 'America’s Most Wanted,' but the case has never been solved. The documentary, directed by Charlie Minn, features interviews with retired FBI case agents Lance Leising and Paul Dalton, as well as Palomares’ brother, Derek. Derek Palomares, who is traumatized by the loss and will not return to Arizona, expressed forgiveness toward the shooter. The film’s release is intended to generate tips from the public. Anyone with information regarding Jason Derek Brown’s whereabouts is urged to contact the FBI. The documentary will also be discussed on 'True Crime Arizona' on Thursday. For more information on the film, the public can visit TheCowardFilm.com. This re-emergence of the case highlights the enduring impact of the unsolved murder on the victim's family and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and filmmakers to bring closure to the decades-old crime.
