Palatine police have obtained nationwide arrest warrants for three men suspected of orchestrating a sophisticated bank impersonation scheme that resulted in a significant financial loss for a local grocery store employee. The suspects are identified as Jose A. Luis Mateo, 35, of Union City, New Jersey; Fredduar A. Escobar Bautista, 28, whose last known address is in Lockbourne, Ohio, though detectives believe he may be in the New York or New Jersey area; and Breider A. Iriarte Campomar, 35, of New York City. The investigation centers on the alleged theft by deception of David Lipsky, a Mariano’s worker who was tricked out of $73,000 from his savings account. According to police reports, the incident occurred last year when Lipsky received phone calls from individuals posing as representatives from Chase Bank’s fraud department. The scammers claimed his account had been compromised and that federal authorities were involved, pressuring him to move his funds to a so-called safe account to avoid arrest. Initially, a $1,000 Zelle transfer was blocked by Chase, but the suspects subsequently instructed Lipsky to visit a bank branch to complete three transfers totaling $73,000. After experiencing doubts later that evening, Lipsky contacted Chase directly, where he was informed the funds could not be recovered. Although $24,000 has been returned to Lipsky’s account several months ago, the remainder of the stolen savings is still sought by law enforcement. The Palatine Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects to contact them at 847-359-9000. Chase Bank has stated it cooperates with law enforcement in these matters and expressed sympathy for the victim, noting that the blame lies with the perpetrators.
