A suspect remains at large following a high-speed chase that occurred during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Lowndes County, Georgia. According to Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk, the incident began on Wednesday morning when ICE personnel entered the Valdosta area to conduct immigration enforcement operations. During the operation, a suspect initiated a chase that resulted in significant property damage and danger to public safety. The suspect reportedly rammed and totaled a law enforcement vehicle before striking a traffic control box head-on at the intersection of East Ann Street and North Ashley Street. Following the collision, the suspect backed into a mechanic garage building, causing part of the structure to collapse. Despite these efforts, the suspect has not been apprehended and is still considered at large. Sheriff Paulk confirmed that while ICE agents picked up several individuals held in the Lowndes County Jail on detainers, and three or four others were taken into custody for administrative issues, the specific suspect involved in the chase remains unidentified and uncaught. The operation has caused significant concern within Valdosta’s Hispanic community, with local business owners and residents expressing fear and anxiety. Some community members reported that individuals were stopped based on fitting a target profile, leading to calls for caution among those potentially on immigration radar. Advocates have organized a rally scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the downtown courthouse to protest the ICE operations. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. The situation highlights the tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local community safety concerns in the region.
