Seattle officials are preparing to replace approximately 80 dark streetlights along the West Seattle Bridge and Spokane Street Viaduct in an overnight construction project scheduled to begin by the end of the month. The repairs address a prolonged period of darkness caused by a copper theft incident earlier this year. The outages stem from the actions of Gregory Wayne Galitzeck, a 47-year-old suspect who remains at large. On June 27, a Seattle Police Department officer observed Galitzeck on the westbound bridge shoulder rolling up roughly 400 feet of freshly cut copper wire. Dressed in high-visibility gear, Galitzeck falsely claimed to be a Seattle City Light employee repairing a lighting snag. Authorities discovered he possessed no valid identification, vehicle, or coworkers, but did find tools, fixed-blade weapons, and methamphetamine. King County prosecutors have charged Galitzeck with first-degree malicious mischief, first-degree theft, and first-degree criminal impersonation. Although released on a personal recognizance bond, Galitzeck failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment on July 7, prompting a judge to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. He has not been apprehended since. To prevent future tampering, crews will install enhanced anti-theft measures, including welded access doors and tamper-proof lids, during the repair work. The project will require overnight lane closures between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. for three to four weeks to minimize daytime traffic disruption. Commuters have navigated dark stretches across the high-traffic corridor for months, and the upcoming repairs aim to restore full lighting functionality. The Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, and the Seattle Police Department are coordinating the effort. The investigating agency is the Seattle Police Department, and tips regarding the location of Gregory Wayne Galitzeck can be directed to law enforcement authorities.
