The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota has strengthened its collaboration with federal authorities, specifically the U.S. Marshals Service, to apprehend wanted fugitives. Since assigning a deputy to the Marshals Service full-time in January 2026, the partnership has resulted in the arrest of 53 individuals across local, state, and national jurisdictions. Lt. Adam Kleffman of the Sheriff’s Office highlighted that this expanded network allows for the pooling of resources, information, and expertise, enabling law enforcement to pursue high-priority targets without geographic restrictions. The task force, which includes 10 part-time members from the North Star Fugitive Task Force, focuses primarily on violent felonies and significant drug cases, though the county’s warrant lists include hundreds of individuals wanted for non-violent offenses such as missed court appearances. In addition to arrests, investigators have seized 15 firearms, more than 3,000 grams of methamphetamine, 1,200 grams of cocaine, 250 grams of fentanyl, and approximately $75,000 in suspected drug trafficking proceeds this year. Kleffman emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance community safety by targeting dangerous individuals and providing support to smaller local police departments that lack the resources for extensive fugitive searches. The partnership leverages federal deputization powers, allowing deputies to operate across state lines in states such as Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Texas, accessing a national network for assistance when necessary. This collaborative effort builds on a relationship established in 2019, now expanded to include full-time integration and advanced training opportunities for both investigative and patrol deputies. The Sheriff’s Office continues to rely on this partnership to bring fugitives to justice, ensuring the wellness and safety of the community by removing dangerous individuals from the streets and disrupting drug trafficking operations.
