The Indianapolis Fire Department is actively seeking the public's assistance in identifying and locating individuals responsible for a series of six intentional fires, or arsons, that have occurred in a specific area east of downtown Indianapolis. According to a news release issued on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, these incidents have taken place within a roughly two-square-block area since October 2025. The locations of the fires include the 200 block of Walcott Street and the 200 and 300 blocks of North State Avenue, situated between East Washington and East New York streets, approximately a dozen blocks east of the I-65 and I-70 interchange. The most recent incident occurred on the morning of Monday, September 21, at 1:38 a.m. at 230 N. Walcott St. This fire destroyed a vacant residence and caused damage to three neighboring homes, two of which were occupied at the time. One resident required medical treatment for smoke exposure, though it remains unclear if the individual was hospitalized. Investigators are urging residents and business owners in the affected neighborhoods to review security camera footage for any activity between midnight and 2 a.m. on that Monday, specifically looking for individuals walking, riding bicycles, or vehicles moving or parked near the Walcott Street location. The other five arsons in the series occurred at various addresses on North State Avenue on July 27, June 2, March 30, December 1, and October 20. Additionally, the department noted that roughly 21% of the 390 fires investigated in the city through August 2026 were determined to be intentionally set. The investigating agency is the Indianapolis Fire Department. Members of the public with information regarding these crimes are asked to contact fire investigators directly or utilize the available tip lines. Information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a cash reward. Authorities will be visiting the neighborhoods on Friday to speak with residents about these six arsons and three other fires in the same vicinity.
