A new documentary titled "The Coward" premiered recently at the AMC Ahwatukee theater in Arizona, bringing renewed attention to the unsolved 2004 murder of armored security courier Keith Palomares. The film focuses on the case of Jason Derek Brown, who is currently a wanted fugitive. In 2004, Brown ambushed and shot Palomares five times outside the theater while the courier was carrying a bag containing $56,000 in cash. Following the shooting, Brown stole the money, fled the scene on a bicycle, and escaped in a white BMW parked nearby. Authorities quickly identified Brown as the suspect, releasing a photograph that generated thousands of tips for the FBI. Brown fled Arizona, allegedly switching vehicles and moving through Nevada and California before his Cadillac Escalade was discovered in Portland, Oregon. Although Brown was removed from the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 2022 due to a lack of corroborated sightings and a de-escalated immediate threat, he remains a wanted suspect with active state and federal warrants. The documentary, directed by Charlie Minn, aims to provide fresh leads and highlight the devastation caused to the Palomares family. Minn emphasized that the film is victim-driven, featuring interviews with Keith’s brother, Derek Palomares, who expressed his desire for justice and dignity for his sibling. The FBI continues to seek information regarding Brown’s whereabouts, urging anyone with knowledge of his location to contact authorities. The premiere at the original crime scene underscores the enduring impact of the case and the ongoing efforts to bring the suspect to justice.
