Hawaii police are actively searching for an unidentified gunman responsible for the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Thomas Malone in Kailua. The incident occurred over the weekend during the Kailua Fall Festival, where an argument between two groups escalated and spilled into the parking lot of a Target store located at 345 Hahani Street. According to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office, Malone sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect is described as a male in his late 20s wearing a black sweater with his hair styled in two braids. Although initial reports suggested a suspect was in custody, the Honolulu Police Department clarified on Monday that no arrests had been made and the individual remains at large. Police are urging the public to review any photographs or video footage from the festival or the immediate vicinity of the Target parking lot. Thomas Malone was the son of Michael Buntenbah, the owner of the Defend Hawaii clothing line and a former associate of crime boss Mike Miske. Buntenbah pleaded guilty in 2022 to conspiracy to commit assault in aid of racketeering. Court records indicate Malone had no prior criminal charges beyond traffic violations, though he was subject to a restraining order filed by his ex-wife. Investigators continue to seek tips regarding the identity and location of the shooter. The Honolulu Police Department has not yet released a specific tip line number in this report, but residents are encouraged to contact HPD with any relevant information. The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for the violence.
