The FBI has added Charles Johnathen Harris, 46, to its Wanted List, suspecting that his reported death three years ago was staged to evade federal charges. Harris, a firefighter from Alameda County, California, was indicted in March 2023 on federal charges of possessing child pornography. The investigation began after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led authorities to discover images of child sex abuse material on his iPhone and social media accounts, including uploads from Alameda County fire stations. Following his initial court appearance and release on bond with restricted internet access, Harris allegedly drowned in a boating accident in Suisun Bay on April 4, 2023. His brother reported that their 15-foot fishing boat capsized in swampland, claiming Harris succumbed to exhaustion hours earlier. However, no body was recovered, and prosecutors immediately questioned the brother’s account, noting inconsistencies. A federal arrest warrant for failure to appear was issued on April 21, 2023. After three years of unresolved investigation, the FBI San Francisco announced that the circumstances warrant further scrutiny and that it is possible Harris faked his death. Harris is described as 5’10”, weighing 220 pounds, with red hair, blue eyes, and light burn scars on his hands. The FBI is urging anyone with information to contact their local office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov.
