New York City police are actively searching for a suspect responsible for a violent, unprovoked assault that left a local man with severe burns. The incident occurred on Monday evening in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. The victim, identified as 44-year-old Johnny Alcantara, was standing outside a Cravin Crispy restaurant, waiting to pick up a food order. According to reports, Alcantara was looking down at his phone with his back turned when a man wearing a black coat approached him carrying a steaming pot. The suspect threw an unidentified hot, bubbling liquid onto Alcantara and immediately fled the scene. Alcantara described the moment as feeling like his skin was on fire, noting that the substance ate through his hoodie and caused severe damage. He sustained burns on the left side of his face, his ears, and the back of his neck, resulting in discoloration and blisters. Witnesses reported seeing a white substance left behind after the attack. Alcantara managed to run into the restaurant screaming for help, traumatizing staff member Oscar Perez, who witnessed the suspect carrying the pot. First responders transported Alcantara to Harlem Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Doctors indicated that he was fortunate the boiling substance did not strike his eye, which could have resulted in blindness. Alcantara is expected to undergo skin grafting procedures to treat the injuries. Police have confirmed that the victim and the suspect did not know each other, characterizing the event as a random act of violence. The investigating agency, the New York City Police Department, is currently on a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the identity or location of the man in the black coat to come forward. Surveillance footage of the incident has been released to the public to assist in the identification and capture of the perpetrator. The case remains an active investigation as detectives review evidence and interview witnesses.
