D.C. Police are actively searching for a suspect who remains at large following a violent incident at a Target store in the Ivy City neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C. The suspect is wanted for shooting an innocent bystander during a confrontation over alleged shoplifting. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, around 5:30 p.m. at the Target located on New York Avenue. According to police reports, the suspect allegedly stole iPads, headphones, and clothing from the store. When two Target employees and an armed Special Police Officer confronted the individual, a physical struggle ensued. During the altercation, the suspect managed to grab the security officer's handgun and fired a shot, striking Rodney Lyde, a bystander who was not involved in the theft. Lyde, a bus driver, was hospitalized and is currently undergoing surgery and a recovery process expected to take months. In a recent interview from his hospital bed, Lyde described the trauma of the event, stating, "All of a sudden, you hear the shots ring out... The only thing I remember was, 'Oh my God. I've been shot.'" Surveillance images released by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department depict the suspect wearing eyeglasses and a distinctive orange-and-black jacket with reflective stripes, resembling a construction traffic cone. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on a scooter. D.C. Police are urging anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information regarding the shooting to contact the department immediately. The victim has retained legal representation to investigate the incident, but the primary focus remains on apprehending the armed fugitive who is still at large.
