Authorities in Dooly County, Georgia, are actively searching for suspects following a mass shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in the small city of Vienna. The incident took place during a sprawling block party celebrating a homecoming football victory for Dooly County High School. According to Sheriff Craig Peavy, more than 50 shots were fired in the early hours of Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two men and leaving nearly three dozen others injured. The victims have been identified as Ja’Quavion Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Sara Lue noted that the two deceased men do not appear to be related. In addition to the fatalities, 35 individuals sustained injuries, with most caused by gunfire and others resulting from the chaotic scramble to flee the scene. Several victims remain hospitalized with critical injuries. Sheriff Peavy stated that the violence erupted when crowds of over 1,000 people were still celebrating late into the night. He described the scene as chaotic, noting that deputies rushed to the location but encountered further gunfire from a block away. The sheriff attributed the incident to problems that can arise at large parties involving people from various locations. Local officials confirmed that the block party was not sponsored by the school and lacked a city permit. Despite the presence of extra deputies anticipating large numbers of alumni and out-of-town visitors, the violence marred what had been a peaceful celebration. The GBI is assisting the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation. As of Monday, no arrests have been announced, and the suspects remain at large. The community is urged to contact law enforcement with any information regarding the incident.
