The FBI and the Oakland Police Department have announced the identification of a murder victim in a decades-old cold case, bringing renewed attention to the manhunt for Taylor Morris Teaford, known as the 'Crew Cut Killer.' Teaford, a fugitive with a significant criminal history, is currently at large and remains on the FBI’s radar despite being removed from the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 1972. The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Joanne Yvonne Burdick, who was a runaway at the time of her death. Burdick was found deceased in an Oakland hotel on October 2, 1969, having been strangled. Witnesses reported seeing her enter the room with a white or Native American male shortly before the crime. Teaford was identified as a prime suspect in her murder based on witness identification and is also suspected in the deaths of two other women: Judith Lattaker, found dead in April 1969, and Alma Fay Dorough, discovered in August 1969. The identification of Burdick was made possible through forensic genetic genealogy, which led investigators to her brother, who voluntarily submitted a DNA sample. The FBI San Francisco office has been assisting with the investigation since 2020, providing forensic analysis and lab support. Teaford’s criminal spree began on July 18, 1967, when he shot and killed his 72-year-old grandmother, Pearl Morris Teaford, and wounded his sister and another individual before escaping into Yosemite National Park. He has been on the run since that date. Oakland Police Chief James Beere described Teaford as a predator who exploited vulnerable individuals. Investigators state that the case remains active, with ongoing efforts to determine Teaford’s current whereabouts and whether he is still alive. Authorities are utilizing additional search methods and technology to locate the suspect. The public is encouraged to contact the FBI San Francisco office or the Oakland Police Department with any information regarding Teaford’s location. This development marks a significant milestone in the long-standing investigation, though the primary objective of apprehending the fugitive remains unfulfilled.
