Akron Police are actively searching for two young men accused of committing an armed robbery at the Sunset Smoke Shop and Hookah Lounge located on North Portage Path. The incident occurred just before midnight last Wednesday, October 7, 2026. According to Akron Police Lieutenant Michael Murphy, two masked individuals, both described as young men wearing all-black clothing, entered the business. At least one suspect brandished a handgun during the event. The suspects proceeded behind the counter, where one individual removed cash from the register while the other grabbed a bag filled with various store items. Following the theft, the suspects fled the scene on foot. The robbery has shocked the local community, with nearby business owners expressing surprise at the violence in what is typically a quiet business district. Robert Yoder, a delivery driver and pizza maker at the adjacent Gionino’s Pizzeria, stated that such incidents are rare in the area. Nick Zanko, who operates a neighboring smoke shop, expressed concern for the safety of the victims and the broader community, noting that other businesses could have been easily harmed. Police are currently investigating to determine if there is a pattern to the crime or a specific motive. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the identities or whereabouts of the two suspects to come forward. The investigating agency is the Akron Police Department. Residents with tips are encouraged to contact law enforcement to assist in the ongoing manhunt for the armed robbery suspects.
