Detroit police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting incident that left a mother and her seven-year-old daughter injured on the city's east side. The incident occurred Monday evening, October 12, 2026, at an apartment complex located on Farnsworth Street near Gratiot and East Warren avenues. According to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, officers received the call around 7 p.m. and arrived on the scene within five minutes. Investigators state that the violence stemmed from an altercation between young children earlier in the day. Following the dispute, a man confronted the mother of one of the children at her front door. Police allege that the man forced his way into the residence and shot the woman in the arm. The bullet passed through her arm and also struck her seven-year-old daughter in the shoulder. Both victims are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to survive their injuries. The suspect, described as a man known to the area, allegedly fled the scene driving a white GMC Terrain. Authorities have asked the man to turn himself in but emphasize that he remains at large. Mayor Mary Sheffield released a statement condemning the act as senseless violence, noting that while the physical injuries may heal, the emotional trauma will be significant. She affirmed that the individual responsible will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Taferi Brent, director of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety, joined Chief Bettison at a press conference to urge the public's assistance. Brent stated there is no place for the suspect to hide and emphasized the need for accountability. The investigating agency, Detroit Police, is requesting that anyone with information regarding the suspect's whereabouts contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
