Bridgeport police are actively searching for a suspect wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Nelson Manuel Batista, 48. The incident occurred on Monday morning, October 12, 2026, at the intersection of Park Avenue and Cottage Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Authorities state that Batista was discovered suffering from a gunshot wound next to his vehicle around 9 a.m. He was transported to St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. The investigation has been significantly advanced by a dashboard camera video captured by Maria Cotto, 44, of Bridgeport. Cotto reported that she encountered two men struggling on the street while driving to drop her daughter off at Porter and Chester Institute. Upon shouting to alert them, she witnessed the men fighting over a handgun. The footage, which has been provided to law enforcement, depicts a white-haired man in a blue hooded sweatshirt and another man with a shaved head in a dark jacket wrestling for control of the weapon. The video shows the man with the shaved head eventually seizing the gun, striking the other man, who was then prone and immobile, on the head with the firearm before fleeing the scene. The Bridgeport Police Department’s Detective Bureau has issued a public appeal, urging the individual identified in the video to turn himself in to the Homicide Unit immediately. The suspect is described as a male with a bald or shaved head, wearing a dark-colored jacket and blue jeans at the time of the incident. Police emphasize the ongoing danger posed by the suspect, who is believed to be in possession of a .22 caliber handgun. The department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is requesting that anyone with information contact the Homicide Unit. The case remains open as authorities work to locate and apprehend the suspect responsible for the fatal shooting.
