Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen and general counsel for Sikhs For Justice, has been warned by the FBI of an imminent threat to his life. Pannun, who is currently in the United States, stated that FBI agents personally visited him on October 15 to deliver the warning. The threat is specifically linked to his planned travel to Edmonton, Canada, for a Khalistan Referendum vote scheduled for October 18. This marks the second time in two months that Pannun has received such a warning from federal agents. In August, the FBI advised him not to travel until the threat was resolved. Pannun is the intended victim in a federal murder-for-hire case unsealed in Manhattan, where prosecutors allege that an Indian government employee, Vikash Yadav, recruited narco-trafficker Nikhil Gupta to arrange the killing. Gupta has pleaded guilty to the charges. Yadav remains at large and is listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. The investigation, known as Operation Hardball, also involves Satinderjeet Singh, known as Goldy Brar, who was added to the most wanted list in September for his alleged role in the 2023 assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Pannun asserts that the criminal networks involved are linked to Indian intelligence operations. Despite the warnings, Pannun confirmed that the Edmonton referendum will proceed as scheduled. The FBI is investigating the leads but has not disclosed the identities of those behind the current threat. The case highlights ongoing tensions between U.S. and Canadian law enforcement regarding transnational organized crime and foreign interference. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the threat or the fugitives to contact the FBI.
