Joseph Matos, 44, a Lincoln Square resident also known as Joseph Troubles Matos, has been added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Matos is accused of the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Illinois National Guardsman Chrys Carvajal in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago on July 3, 2021. Authorities allege that Matos and his associate, Gary Roberson, 42, shot Carvajal to maintain their status within the Milwaukee Kings street gang. Carvajal, a Portage Park native who had recently returned from basic training in South Carolina, was walking to his car after a party when he was struck by gunfire. He was later found unresponsive with gunshot wounds to his back and abdomen. While Roberson was arrested during an FBI raid on Matos’ home in May 2024 and is currently awaiting trial, Matos remains at large. Investigators believe Matos is hiding within the Chicago area, though he has ties to Dallas, Texas, and California. The FBI has increased the reward for information leading to Matos’ arrest to $1 million. Matos is described as having distinctive tattoos, including M-Town Kings on his neck and phrases like Move in Silence on his hands. The FBI Chicago field office urges the public to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit tips.FBI.gov with any information regarding Matos’ whereabouts. Family members of Carvajal expressed hope that this designation will bring closure to the five-year search for justice.
