Maine State Police are actively seeking the public's assistance in identifying and locating a suspect involved in a serious hit-and-run incident that occurred on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield, Maine. The crash took place on the morning of October 14, 2026, near mile marker 150 on the northbound side of the interstate. According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss, police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:15 a.m. Investigators determined that a light-colored pickup truck, which was hauling a black dump trailer, struck a concrete Jersey barrier and an orange construction barrel in a single-lane construction zone. The impact propelled the construction barrel into Richard Smart, a 56-year-old construction worker from Westfield who was employed by Northeast Construction. Smart was working with a crew unloading barriers at the time of the incident. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital, from which he has since been released. The suspect, described by investigators as male, allegedly realized the crash had occurred, turned his vehicle around, and then sped away from the scene. Witnesses reported seeing the driver make this maneuver before fleeing. State police have released a photograph of the suspected vehicle to aid in identification. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has information regarding the vehicle or the operator to contact the Bangor Regional Communications Center at 207-973-3700, extension 9, and ask for Trooper Klayton Peckham. The investigation is ongoing as police continue to search for the at-large driver.
