The Irvine Police Department is actively seeking the public's assistance in identifying three suspects who remain at large in connection with a sophisticated distraction fraud scheme. The incident, which occurred in early September, began outside a Walmart in Irvine, California. According to police reports, one suspect utilized sleight-of-hand tactics to steal a victim's debit card from their wallet as they exited the store. The suspects then moved quickly to exploit the stolen financial information before the victim could cancel the card. Two accomplices allegedly used the stolen debit card to withdraw cash from an ATM in Tustin and to obtain additional funds through a bank teller transaction in Hacienda Heights. The total financial loss reported by the victim is nearly $4,000. This case was highlighted this week as part of the Irvine Police Department’s 'Felony Friday' series, which aims to raise awareness about serious crimes. Investigators allege that the suspects combined traditional distraction theft tactics with modern debit-card fraud to rapidly convert the stolen card into cash. If identified and arrested, the suspects could face multiple felony charges, including grand theft, fraudulent use of an access card under California Penal Code section 484g, identity theft under Penal Code section 530.5, and conspiracy. Grand theft convictions can carry penalties of 16 months, two years, or three years in county jail. The Irvine Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the identities or whereabouts of these three suspects to come forward. The public is encouraged to contact Detective Dave Etlinger at 949-724-7188 or by email at detlinger@cityofirvine.org. Authorities emphasize that tips are crucial to preventing additional victims from suffering similar losses in Orange County.
